Crews Battle Chemical Fire at Yonkers Warehouse for Second Time This Month
Emergency crews responded early Saturday to a three-alarm fire at a Yonkers warehouse, marking the second chemical-related blaze at the same location this month.
The fire broke out around 3 a.m. at 143 Woodworth Avenue, a warehouse that stores household beauty products. According to Executive Assistant Fire Chief PJ Goldfeder, the incident began with a chemical reaction inside the facility, prompting what he called a “full hazmat assignment.”
At first, crews observed heavy smoke without visible flames. By 7 a.m., Goldfeder said, an exothermic reaction inside the warehouse ignited a fire. Investigators believe Saturday’s blaze started in the same way as the earlier incident at the site.
Safety Monitoring and Response
Officials monitored air quality throughout the day. Goldfeder reassured residents that the smoke was “basic fire smoke” and not chemically hazardous. He noted that evacuations would be ordered only if conditions changed.
More than 10 firefighters suffered minor injuries, but no civilian injuries were reported. Photos from the scene showed thick plumes of smoke over nearby neighborhoods and the Metro-North Hudson Line tracks. MTA officials monitored train service as a precaution.
Fire Contained by Evening
By 5 p.m., the fire was declared under control, though police and fire crews remained on site into the night. Several fire companies were released from the scene Saturday afternoon.
Authorities confirmed that residents do not need to keep their windows closed, as no harmful contaminants were detected in the air.
This is the second chemical fire at the warehouse in September, raising questions about the site’s safety and storage practices.
