Saint Joseph’s Medical Center has received a $19.68 million grant from the New York State Department of Health’s Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program IV to renovate and modernize its surgical facilities. The funding will allow the Yonkers hospital to upgrade its operating rooms with state-of-the-art technology, improve patient outcomes, and expand access to advanced surgical care.
The announcement was made by Michael J. Spicer, President and Chief Executive Officer of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center, during a press conference at the hospital attended by local and state leaders. Speakers included New York State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Assemblyman Nader Sayegh, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, and Board of Trustees Chairman James Landy.
The renovation project will ensure that Yonkers residents have access to cutting-edge surgical care close to home—without needing to travel outside the city for complex procedures.
“Under Governor Hochul’s leadership and unwavering commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of all New Yorkers, investments like this will help residents receive quality care close to home,” said Dr. James McDonald, New York State Health Commissioner. “Modernizing Saint Joseph’s operating rooms will improve patient safety, expand access to advanced surgeries, and strengthen the health of the Yonkers community.”
“This funding allows us to take a monumental step forward for our hospital and the community we serve,” said Michael Spicer, President and CEO of Saint Joseph’s Medical Center. “By renovating our operating rooms, we’re reducing healthcare disparities and ensuring that Yonkers residents have access to the highest quality surgical care—now and in the years ahead.”
In addition to enhancing patient safety, the upgrades will boost operational efficiency, reduce turnover time between procedures, and increase the hospital’s capacity to serve more patients. The improvements are also expected to help attract and retain top surgical talent by providing best-in-class technology and modern workspaces. Construction is slated for completion by 2029.
The Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program IV is investing nearly $300 million in more than 50 projects statewide, each focused on expanding access to inpatient, primary, behavioral health, and long-term care services—particularly in underserved communities.
