Small Earthquake Felt in Yonkers Area Tuesday Morning
Some Yonkers residents felt a brief tremor Tuesday morning after a small earthquake struck nearby along the Hudson River.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the magnitude 2.3 earthquake occurred around 10:17 a.m. on March 10, with its epicenter near Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown, several miles north of Yonkers.
The quake originated several miles below the surface and produced only light shaking across parts of Westchester County. Residents in Yonkers and neighboring communities reported feeling a quick rumble or vibration that lasted just a few seconds.
Officials say earthquakes of this size are considered minor, and no injuries or structural damage have been reported.
While earthquakes are not common in the New York metropolitan area, small seismic events do occasionally occur in the Hudson Valley due to ancient fault lines that run beneath parts of the region.
For many residents, the moment passed quickly, but it was enough to spark conversation throughout the morning.
“Did you feel that?”
Residents who noticed the tremor are encouraged to share where they were when the brief shaking occurred.
