A 14-year-old Yonkers resident is facing multiple charges after authorities say he constructed and detonated homemade explosive devices, including one that destroyed a portable toilet in a city park.
According to Yonkers police, officers first responded earlier this month to reports of loud blasts and suspected fireworks near Bregano Park. When they arrived, they found no visible evidence of fireworks, but the investigation intensified the following day after a severely damaged portable toilet was discovered inside the park.
The extent of the damage led officials to determine that the explosion was not caused by standard fireworks, prompting the involvement of the Westchester County Police Hazardous Devices Unit and the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force.
Through their investigation, authorities identified a local teenager as a suspect. Police allege the teen had been assembling improvised explosive devices and was responsible not only for the park incident but also for several other explosions reported in the area in recent weeks.
The suspect was taken into custody at his home without incident. Investigators say he admitted to building and detonating the devices. A search of the residence also turned up materials believed to be used in the construction of explosives.
Police emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting that improvised explosive devices pose a significant risk regardless of intent. Officials also urged parents and guardians to remain attentive to warning signs of potentially dangerous behavior.
The teen has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, and reckless endangerment. Because of his age, the case is being handled through the juvenile justice system.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incidents.
