Yonkers’ Mayor Spano to Establish New Veterans Advisory Board

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano today announced the creation of the Veterans Advisory Board, which will lead efforts to develop and recommend initiatives that strengthen, support, and enhance the quality of life for Yonkers’ veterans. Applications are available at yonkersny.gov/VAB and the Yonkers Department of Veterans Affairs, at 120 New Main Street, through November 3.
“Today’s veterans face unique challenges that differ from those of earlier generations,” said Mayor Spano. “It’s vital our board reflects that diversity of experience. By bringing every generation of veterans to the table, we strengthen our ability to serve them and their families while reaffirming our lasting commitment to those who have sacrificed for our freedoms.”
Members of the volunteer Board must be a Yonkers resident and a veteran. The Board will consist of seven members — six representing each Council District and one serving at large — all of whom must be Yonkers residents and veterans. To reflect the full spectrum of Yonkers’ veteran community, at least half of the board’s members will be veterans under the age of 50. Those interested in becoming a board member can apply at yonkersny.gov/VAB. Members will be chosen and convened by Mayor Spano.
Responsibilities of the Yonkers Veterans Advisory Board include:
Serving as a liaison between the City and various veteran-related community-based organizations
Promoting awareness of veterans’ contributions
Supporting events honoring veterans
Mayor Spano will accept applications today through Monday, November 3. The Mayor’s Veterans Advisory Board joins nine other advisory boards created by Mayor Spano since 2012, many of which have implemented policies, recommendations, special events, and employment opportunities. Just last month, Mayor Spano established the Senior Advisory Board.
