Sacred Heart High School Launches Gym Modernization Campaign After Flooding
After severe flooding in November caused extensive damage to its athletic facilities, Sacred Heart High School is rallying the Yonkers community to help rebuild a space that is central to student life.
The flooding forced the school’s gymnasium to be completely stripped down. Subsequent assessments revealed the presence of asbestos, making a full renovation not only necessary but urgent to ensure a safe environment for students. Since the damage, Sacred Heart students have been sharing gym time at the Greenburgh Academy, a temporary arrangement that school leaders say is outdated and not sustainable in the long term.
To kick off efforts to rebuild, the school is hosting a Gym Modernization Campaign Kickoff Fundraiser on Saturday, January 24, at Doubleday’s. The event marks the first step in a broader campaign aimed at restoring the gym as a modern, safe, and functional space for athletics, school assemblies, and community events.
Recognizing that not everyone can attend the fundraiser, Sacred Heart is also encouraging supporters to contribute in other ways. Donations of any size will go directly toward the renovation effort, helping cover construction costs and ensuring students can once again benefit from a dedicated on-campus facility.
School representatives emphasized that community support will be critical to the project’s success. “The gym is more than just a place to play sports,” one organizer noted. “It’s where school spirit is built, where students gather, and where memories are made.”
Community members are encouraged to share the campaign flyer, spread the word, and donate if possible. Every contribution brings Sacred Heart High School one step closer to reopening a gym that reflects the needs and potential of its students—and ensures they have a safe, modern space to learn, compete, and come together.
