Yonkers Officials Coordinate Relief Effort After Fire at 50 Riverdale Ave

Yonkers officials are coordinating a multi-agency response following a major fire at 50 Riverdale Avenue that displaced dozens of residents.

The blaze, which broke out on the morning of April 28, escalated to a multi-alarm response as firefighters worked to contain flames that spread across portions of the high-rise building. Emergency crews evacuated residents as conditions worsened, and multiple apartments were impacted by fire, smoke, and water damage.

City agencies—including the Yonkers Fire Department, Yonkers Police Department, Office of Emergency Management, Constituent Services, and the Department of Housing and Buildings—are working alongside community partners to support affected families.

As part of the response, the city has launched a donation drive to collect essential items for residents who were forced from their homes.

Officials are asking for new items only, including:

  • Clothing basics such as underwear, socks, T-shirts, and sweatpants in a range of sizes, including children’s sizes

  • Toiletries including toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and feminine hygiene products

  • Prepackaged hygiene kits for rapid distribution

  • Baby supplies such as diapers, wipes, and formula

  • Pet food and basic pet supplies

  • Bedding

  • Reusable shopping bags or small duffel bags to help residents carry belongings

Donations are being accepted at Yonkers City Hall through May 13.

The coordinated effort is aimed at providing immediate relief to families impacted by the fire, many of whom remain displaced as recovery efforts continue.
