Off-Duty State Trooper Shoots Teen in Attempted Yonkers Carjacking

A 17-year-old boy was shot by an off-duty New York State Trooper Sunday afternoon after he allegedly tried to carjack her at knifepoint at a Yonkers gas station, police said.

The incident happened around 12:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 26, at the Mobil station on Kimball Avenue, according to the Yonkers Police Department.

Police said the trooper, a female member of Troop NYC, was refueling her vehicle when the teen approached her, pulled out a knife, and got into the driver’s seat of her car. The trooper then fired a single shot from her off-duty firearm, striking the suspect in the left arm. The bullet continued into his chest, according to police.

Despite being shot, the suspect drove the vehicle toward the rear of the gas station, crashing through a shed and a fence before coming to a stop in a nearby apartment complex parking lot on Midland Avenue, police said.

He then attempted to flee on foot. Yonkers officers tracked him down near the entrance of a building on Midland Avenue and took him into custody without further incident. A knife was recovered at the time of his arrest, police added.

Officers provided medical aid at the scene before the teen was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and remains in stable condition.

Because of state law, the suspect’s identity has not been released. He is expected to face multiple charges, including first-, second-, and third-degree robbery, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, and second-degree menacing. He is awaiting arraignment.

The trooper has not been identified. Police said she is considered the victim in the incident.

The Yonkers Police Department’s Major Case Squad is leading the criminal investigation. The New York State Police are conducting a separate internal review, which is standard protocol following any incident in which a trooper discharges a firearm.
