Hall of Fame Coach Jan Mitchell to Retire After 51 Years at Iona Preparatory
After more than half a century guiding student-athletes and building one of New York State’s most accomplished track and cross-country programs, longtime coach Jan Mitchell has announced he will retire from Iona Preparatory School.
Mitchell spent 51 years at Iona Prep, where he coached generations of runners while also serving as a teacher. In addition to his work at the all-boys school, he coached for 36 years at The Ursuline School, helping launch and grow its cross-country and track & field programs and expanding opportunities for female athletes in the sport.
During his time leading Iona Prep’s program, Mitchell’s teams achieved remarkable success. His athletes earned more than 800 All-County honors, captured over 100 sectional titles, and secured 22 Westchester County championships. The program also produced 87 All-Americans, while Iona Prep teams won eight Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) championships. Many of the runners he coached continued their careers at the collegiate level and beyond.
Mitchell’s contributions to the sport have been widely recognized. He has been inducted into several Halls of Fame, including those of the Armory Foundation, the CHSAA, Iona Prep, and Ursuline. In 2023, he was also honored as New York State Coach of the Year.
Beyond his achievements on the track, Mitchell spent decades teaching social studies and European history, mentoring students academically as well as athletically.
Iona Prep President Brother Thomas R. Leto praised Mitchell’s impact on the school community, noting that his leadership helped shape generations of students both in the classroom and through athletics.
Athletic Director Ryan Mahoney said Mitchell established a standard of excellence that influenced decades of Iona Prep athletes, leaving a legacy that will continue long after his retirement.
When he steps away after 51 years, Mitchell will leave behind not only championship teams, but also a lasting reputation as one of the most respected coaches in the school’s history and across New York State.
Iona Prep plans to recognize Mitchell’s career during the school’s President’s Thanksgiving Bash on November 20, 2026. More information is available at IonaPrep.org.
