The newly unified high school football team faces defending Section 1 champion Mamaroneck in Friday's Class AA quarterfinals, just two weeks after shutting out the Tigers.

In their first season representing Yonkers as a unified high school football program, the Yonkers Guardians have earned a spot in the Section 1 Class AA playoffs, marking an important milestone for the city's public school athletes.

The Guardians, seeded seventh, will travel to face No. 2 Mamaroneck on Friday, October 30, at 6 p.m., with a place in the sectional semifinals on the line.

The matchup carries particular significance. Just two weeks ago, Yonkers delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season, shutting out Mamaroneck 12–0 on October 17. The victory came against the defending Section 1 Class AA champions, demonstrating the Guardians' ability to compete with one of the region's established football programs.

Now, the two teams will meet again, this time with their postseason hopes at stake.

A New Chapter for Yonkers Football

The Guardians' inaugural season represents a new chapter for high school football in Yonkers, bringing student-athletes from across the city's public schools together under one team identity.

What began as a new program has quickly developed into an opportunity for players who once represented separate schools to compete alongside one another and represent Yonkers on a larger stage.

Under head coach Doug Hogue, the Guardians finished the regular season with a 3–4 record, including victories over Mount St. Michael Academy, White Plains, and Mamaroneck.

Senior quarterback Brendan Mulvihill has been a key contributor, recording 2,167 total yards this season, while senior wide receiver Omar Areche has accumulated 629 receiving yards.

Despite an uneven regular-season record, the Guardians have demonstrated their potential, particularly in their victory over Mamaroneck.

A Familiar Opponent, Higher Stakes

Friday's quarterfinal presents a challenging test for Yonkers.

Mamaroneck enters the matchup with a 5–3 record and the experience of a program that captured the Section 1 Class AA championship in 2025 and advanced to the state semifinals.

The Tigers will also have home-field advantage as they look to avenge their earlier loss to Yonkers.

For the Guardians, however, their October 17 victory offers reason for confidence heading into the rematch.

A win Friday would send Yonkers into the Class AA semifinals, scheduled for November 6–7, bringing the newly unified program one step closer to competing for a sectional championship.

Regardless of Friday's outcome, the Guardians' playoff appearance represents a meaningful beginning for the program and the student-athletes helping establish its identity.

For a team playing its first season together, the opportunity to compete for a sectional title is already an accomplishment worth recognizing.

Today's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Mamaroneck High School.
